I'm currently using my old computer. Old is a relative term here. The one I was using until very recently was itself, in technical parlance, antediluvian. {g}
I think computers have already evolved into a new life form and are trying, with mixed success, not to draw attention to this fact. Temperamental at best, the antediluvian one spent the last couple of weeks on life-support and finally went tits up last Saturday. 8-( I have come to the conclusion that I am wa-ay to dependent on my computer. {g}
Today, 4th. October, is my birthday. I'm still as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth which, before you say anything, are my own. I don't tend to make too must fuss about these events nowadays; there always seems to be an onus on you to 'have a good time', so that if you don't, then somehow you've been deprived.
So far, I'm doing better than my father on this particular birthday. He woke up on his birthday morning, got out of bed, collapsed and died. It was quite the worst day of my life
so far - April 26th 1977. No more, please! Not surprisingly, it has led to a fair amount of introspection recently, like, 'When he was my age, he only had x days to live'. Not that any of us knew it at the time. Maybe if we had, he might still be alive. Anyway, that's a long time ago now.
My birthday is a good day for the Space Age as it began on this day in 1957, when the Russians launched Sputnik 1. Today, SpaceShipOne flew into suborbital space for the second time in five days, claiming the $10 million Ansari X Prize for the first privately built vehicle to carry a pilot and the equivalent weight of two passengers to the edge of space, and then repeat the feat within two weeks.
The weather forecast for today was pretty grim, but for once the forecasters got it wrong in a good way as the sun has been smiling benignly on me, and the sky is now as blue and cloudless as the skies over the Mojave Desert where the X Prize was won.
I have had more than the usual tally of cards, along with interesting news; a younger cousin has moved house and an older one has become a granny. Scary! Well, the latter anyway... {g}
I also received a card from Eos - where does she find all these cards with ducks on?!!! {VBG} This came from Iowa, U.S.A., taking less than four working days to arrive. I'm well impressed. It usually takes longer than that to send something to the next village by post. {rolls eyes}
And saving the best till last... I had a delightful and unexpected birthday present from Captain Wendy Anubis-Jackson. 8-) She sent me a framed embroidery in sky blue and gold of my name in Egyptian hieroglyphs. I am well chuffed! Thank you, Wendy. 8-) I'll be in touch.
Ooh, I've just discovered that Mel, who came to do some gardening (which she loves, although it more resembles lumberjackery!) has also done my washing while we were out for lunch! Bless. 8-) And Ama has texted me a birthday cake! LOL! It took me about twenty minutes to text back my appreciation of this as I still haven't fully got to grips with this new technology yet...
And finally, we had a quiz match tonight against Magic Robots which we won 102 - 74, our first ton this season. The most amusing question of the evening for me was: 'If it was your birthday today, what would your zodiac sign be?'
So yeah - all in all, I did have a good time today. 8-)
