Yesterday, there was a woman talking on the radio about pearls. If like me, you didn't know this, pearls are now 'in', having been 'out' for some forty or fifty years. But you can't wear them as they were worn in the '60s. Oh dear me no. That would make you look like a slut (I think she said, but I might have misheard.)

She then went on to detail what sort of pearls might be worn, and how and where, but don't ask me. I wasn't paying that much attention. However, one way of wearing pearls was described as "obviously ironic." Ironic. Pearls. Right...

I do not. Get. 'Fashion.' Never have and likely never will now. I buy T-shirts in nice bright colours, and slacks whose sole criteria are that they must a) fit and b) not clash with my T-shirts. They do not cost enough to pay off the national debt of a small banana republic.

Where is the point of paying ten times what I pay in order to have 'NAFNAF' or 'Fruit of the Loom' or 'The Sweater Shop' emblazoned across your bosom? Not only are you paying way over the odds but you are advertising their products and they aren't paying you - you are paying them to do so. If that isn't arse-about-face, I don't know what is!

My worst problems with 'fashion' were related to trying to buy winter shoes for the children. If you had a son, no problem. You could get stout, foot-shaped shoes that covered the whole foot and had nice, thick soles with a good, deep tread.

If you had a daughter, the only shoes available girls from about six or seven years of age, had thin, flat, slippy soles, small heels, pointed toes, and the uppers covered little more than the child's toes. Fortunately, my daughter wasn't a girly wuss - still isn't - and raised no objections to wearing boys shoes. Now, at twenty nine, she has perfect feet. 8-)

So why do we let big business force these fashion fads on us? Why do we fall for it? Are we really so dumb as to put ephemeral fashion 'concepts' ahead of comfort, safety, and a healthy bank balance? It seems so. 8-(
